Beverly airport has had its problems — financial woes, angry neighbors, that time
the Hood Blimp got stuck in the trees — but you can say this about it: It’s popular
with Hollywood.

In the last two years alone it’s hosted filming for two major motion pictures: “The
Proposal,” now a top box-office hit for Sandra Bullock, and now “Furry Vengeance,”
the Brendan Fraser wildlife-vs.-developer movie. (Wonder who wins? We haven’t
seen the script, but we’re guessing the animals don’t wind up stuffed on the
developer’s mantel.)

Over in Marblehead, meanwhile, the town is getting ready to host “Grown Ups,”
the Adam Sandler/Kevin James vehicle that has been shooting around the North
Shore and recently took over Woodman’s restaurant for almost a week. Yes, we’re
the darlings of Hollywood up here, and why? Because we’re so darn attractive,
that's why.

Also, less traffic than the Cape.

Marblehead is not Hollywood, it just plays Hollywood in the movies.

At least that's what the town will be doing on Aug. 6 and 7, a Thursday and a
Friday, when Adam Sandler and the film crew for "Grown-ups" comes to town.
Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, Chris Rock and Salma Hayek co-star along with more
than a dozen actors.

"
We were scouting for this house for four months," says location manager Derek
Cunningham. The story is set in Connecticut. But it's filmed in Massachusetts.

And if that's not confusing enough, a French/Spanish Colonial-type home on Harbor
Avenue was recruited to be Sandler's movie home back in Los Angeles.

"We have a list in our heads of film-friendly towns," Cunningham says. "And we
know Marblehead is."

The house looks right — if only the weather can play Southern California.

"The scene is outdoors," says Cunningham, a Lowell resident. "We're praying that
there are no clouds."

The filming should be a minor boon for local restaurants, among others. "We try to
keep everything within the community," Cunningham says.

But those aren't the only benefits, observes Ann Marie Casey of the Chamber of
Commerce. "This is also an opportunity to showcase our beautiful town for future
filming and for vacationers."

Expect some fireworks this week on the set of Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups" flick at
Centennial Grove located at 30 Martin St. in Essex.

In fact, a Loaded Gun Boston source says there will be a couple of night's worth of
"oohs" and "aahs" in the works for the flick's Fourth of July scene slotted to film at
the Chebacco Lake location this week.

As previously reported, crews gave a heads up last month warning of some post-
holiday fireworks. The flyer indicates, "Please don't be alarmed if you see them at
some point after the actual Fourth of July holiday is over, and be aware that
fireworks may continue until late on some nights."

The film "Grown Ups" is a comedy about five high school friends who reunite with
their families during the summer at a lake house after 30 years apart and stars
Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Tim Meadows, Rob Schneider, David Spade,
Salma Hayek, Maria Bello and Maya Rudolph.

Also, "Grown Ups" crews are building an elaborate set on the "neck" in Marblehead
located at a private residence located at 100 Harbor Avenue. For the next few
weeks, set designers will be busy constructing a facade outside of the French-
Spanish colonial-style house for a scene scheduled to film on Thursday, Aug. 6 and
Friday, Aug. 7. Tents will be set up at Riverhead Beach as well as the parking lot
at Marblehead High School.

As previously reported in Loaded Gun, a source says "Grown Ups" will splish-splash
its way the second week in August to Water Wizz of Cape Cod, a family-themed
fun park located at 3031 Cranberry Hwy. in East Wareham.
